Reddit is reportedly trialing a new feature that will allow its users to authenticate and showcase their non-fungible tokens (NFTs) as profile pictures.

According to a statement provided to TechCrunch on Wednesday, Reddit spokesperson Tim Rathschmidt said “We’re always exploring ways to provide value for users and communities on Reddit.” He further added, “At the moment we’re testing the ability to use NFTs as profile pictures (avatars) and verify ownership.”

This comes after Twitter, another community-based content aggregator announced it’s worked out a tool that will allow Non-Fungible Tokens as a profile display option though only available to Twitter Blue subscribers in iOS in the initial phase.

This new way for users to authenticate their profile pictures is fueled by non-fungible tokens (NFTs). This comes as good news for NFT owners who have been uploading jpeg images of their digital assets as profile pictures.

And you might be left asking

Yeah but you might be wrong though

On Twitter, NFT profile pictures appear as hexagons rather than in the circular format that is available for regular profile pictures. Tapping on the pictures prompts details about the art and its ownership to appear.

What this means is a CTRL + Saved graphic will be easily recognizable and not only makes this hilariously obvious but also gives art owners direct consent to sue whoever for breach of Intellectual property rights.

Also interesting to note is that Twitter launched its $US2.99 per month subscription offering in the US back in November, in addition to Canada, New Zealand, and Australia, which provides access to a range of add-on features like undo tweets, new color themes ad-free articles.

Back to Reddit…

Worth remembering that they announced their own version of NFT called CryptoSnoo NFTs built on Etherium which at that time they said – “represent some of the most groundbreaking moments in art history.”
Once a user purchases a CryptoSnoo NFT and links it to their Reddit account, the NFT image becomes the user’s avatar on the social media platform. Additionally, users get a collectible NFT card on their profile, and the comments made by the user get an animated glow.
The micro-blogging platform however will support users authenticating and uploading their own personal art and NFTs as avatars asides it CryptoSnoo NFT.
And while Twitter is already trialing theirs in some European and North American countries, Reddit did not announce when the feature will be available. Instead, Rathschmidt mentioned: “It’s a small, internal test and no decisions have been
made about expanding or rolling out the capability.”

Moving Forward

There is definitely going to be one issue – reliance on Centralized Exchanges.
Assuming Twitter places the faith of every uploaded NFT on its platform to say OpenSea, a minor outage at the platform will not only affect personal art displays but also essentially knock out Twitter’s Blue NFT option as well.
Jack will never be

Though no report on how Reddit plans to host its NFTS, this generally goes to highlight an issue with what’s theoretically a decentralized market, where people are not – again, theoretically – reliant on any one platform.

However, Blockchain and Decentralization are here is to stay and the only way is to make mistakes and get better long term.
